History: I'll be the ultimate....decoy......

Appearance:

Hinata could probably best be described as the embodiment of a small, yappy dog. Standing at a whole 162.8 (that .8 is very important, tyvm) centimeters, approximately 5'4", Hinata is tiny and loud, with fluffy, orange hair that sticks up in fifty directions and brown eyes.

This gif is a completely accurate and important representation of him.

Personality:

Hinata Shouyou is a sports anime hero. Let's start with that. Your protagonist of Haikyuu!! embodies all of the important qualities of a sports anime hero--he's fast, he's strong, he's brave, he has brightly colored hair, and most of all, he freaking loves his sport, which is, in this case, volleyball. As a child, Hinata Shouyou saw a volleyball match on television where a very short guy was leading a team from Miyagi at nationals, where he was nicknamed the "Little Giant". From that very moment, Hinata decided, just like that, he was going to play volleyball and be just like that guy, who was able to lead from the court despite his diminutive size. It's things like these that make Hinata a ridiculously determined and hardworking character, because once he did decide that, he began training. Really, really hard. Hinata never gives up on anything and is so dedicated to his volleyball that he started begging friends, moms, and the girl's club at his middle school to toss to him so he could practice his spiking. Hinata doesn't just have big ambitions (to play on the same stage as the Little Giant, for a start) but he has the work ethic to follow through on them, putting plenty of effort into himself in order to try and achieve his dreams. He follows the Little Giant straight through to Karasuno High School, where he earns a position as a middle blocker--a decoy--which makes him a little dejected at first, but Hinata accepts the title in order to make the best of it that he possibly can for the team and for himself. He'll literally do anything to get the hand-stinging feeling from spiking the ball. (That's not to say that he's going to give up on being the ace like the Little Giant, though. Yeah right.)

In his basic personality, Hinata can be described in one word: earnest. He's incredibly friendly and sociable, showing an ease to get along with just about anyone (well, almost anyone) and despite his stature, he has a big personality, one that's very, very loud. Hinata is extremely energetic and spends more time running than he does walking, often jumping in the air or yelling out of sheer joy when cool things happen. He bonds with people at the drop of a hat, whether they want to be his friend or not--he's a little bit of a human bulldozer sometimes, to the point of where he drags Yachi to talk to her hesitant mom about helping the volleyball team because he just can't see any possible problem with that. Hinata's enthusiasm renders him quite like a small, yappy dog, and he does a lot of twitching and moving around when he's not on the court (or when Kageyama isn't tossing to him) because he just wants to be involved. He's rarely tactful and fairly stubborn, not to mention absurdly competitive--Hinata can get very intense when it comes to winning. It's quite the contradiction from his usual goofy gets-nailed-in-the-face-with-volleyballs personality, but when it comes to the game (or to his rivals) Hinata can often be a different person, finding a sort of cool, collected calmness that only comes to him on the court. Kageyama notes that it's hard to reconcile the two sides of Hinata, and this contradictory element comes up in his personality often. Where Hinata gets so nervous before games that he usually has to run off to the bathroom (or puke on his poor upperclassmen), when confronted with bigger, badder members of rival teams, Hinata has no shame in telling them that they should be ready to expect a challenge. He even challenges Ushijima, one of the top aces in Japan, straight to his face, stealing a ball from him and impressing him with his speed and general ballsiness. Despite that, Hinata can let his nerves get to him easily, and he spends a lot of his first few matches screwing up all over the place and making stupid, easy mistakes because of it: he works himself into panics before any of his game sense ever kicks in. It's because of his incessant desire to be on the court that he gets so nervous--Hinata does, actually, screw up a lot, and he's always afraid that he'll be taken off the court because of it.

His competitiveness is probably on its best display when it comes to Kageyama, who he declared as his arch rival after a match where his team was soundly defeated by Kageyama's. Kageyama easily brings out Hinata's temper, and the two of them argue about pretty much everything: to give you an idea, they race each other to school every morning because they don't want to lose. However, at the same time, Hinata trusts and respects Kageyama so much that he hits some of his tosses with his eyes closed. His unending trust in his (later) teammate applies to the rest of Karasuno as well, and Hinata believes strongly and unendingly in his friends, often trying to inspire them the best he can. One of Hinata's best qualities is that despite his sort of wild emotions and neverending energy, he's absolutely sincere about everything he does, from helping Yachi to telling Kageyama that he's always there for him on the court.

He's easily inspired himself, too. Hinata is dangerous as a player because he always wants to learn--he's constantly exclaiming how cool his teammates are and asking them to teach him things. In fact, Hinata is so excitable he speaks in his own language ("genius-speak", as Tsukishima calls it) which mostly consists of describing things like they're so kablam, you know?! This makes sense to no one except Nishinoya and Kageyama (and Nekoma's Inuoka, in a ridiculously cute scene), but it doesn't stop Hinata from using it anyway. He's not the smartest guy on the planet, having failed several of his classes over the summer because pretty much all he thinks about is volleyball, but his court smarts outweigh his lack of book smarts or common sense...usually. Ultimately, all of Hinata's emotions are as wild as he is--when he's happy, he's extremely happy. When he's furious, he's yelling and angry. When he's sad, he cries, and cries a lot. Hinata's the very definition of over the top, but it all seems fairly fitting for the protagonist of a series like Haikyuu--and for a wannabe future ace.

Abilities:
Hinata's abilities pretty much all have to do with volleyball. He's very fast and has keen reflexes, and can also jump really high. He's a good middle blocker and a great player, and he can hit Kageyama's freakish pinpoint tosses, which is a whole other thing in itself.

Third Person:
Every morning, Hinata had a routine. Rain, sleet, snow, hail, it didn't matter what he was doing--he went for a run, in hopes of increasing his already freakish stamina even further. Every day that Hinata didn't run was another five centimeters he sunk when he got tired, every day that he ignored his conditioning was a receive he just couldn't make. Thinking that made him sick to his stomach: even fresh off of Karasuno's victory over Aoba Johsai, he could still remember what it felt like to feel his spike get blocked and have it go falling just beyond his head.

Never again, he'd decided, even if that was most likely impossible--he'd never let that happen again.

Now, being stuck in this weird place, Hinata wasn't about to give up his training. It's an early afternoon when he makes his way out the door, headphones in his ears, jogging down the main walk of the city and mouthing the words to whatever song he happens to be running to, completely ignorant of people on the street around him.

Which comes to be a problem when Hinata comes to a full stop next to a signpost advertising community events. Someone bumps into him and grumbles and he turns around with a too-loud, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry!", bowing hurriedly before he's back to the signpost, slapping both of his hands on it and staring at the sign.

PICKUP VOLLEYBALL GAME, JUNE 1ST

Hinata's eyes get huge and he rips off one of the tabs on the page with a phone number, holding it in his hands like a golden ticket. Ever since he's come to this stupid town, playing volleyball has seemed almost impossible--like no one, for some insane, stupid reason, wanted to play. Sure, practicing by himself was fine (begging his "sibling" to help him out seemed to be a pretty common occurrence lately) but Hinata was dying to get back in a game.

"YESSS!" he yells, suddenly, leaping up a good three feet in the air, and startling passerby. Hinata Shouyou's volleyball training is officially back on schedule!
